It’s a six-pointer this weekend

“We know the importance of the game this Saturday, but we are calm, we have to win.”

Rubén Castro knows the importance this weekend’s game against Levante, I think we all do. He actually said “we have to win sí o sí.” In that lovely Spanish phrases which literally means ‘yes or yes’, Betis have no option but to get all three points otherwise they will find themselves firmly in a relegation dog fight again.

A few weeks ago after a six game unbeaten run we all thought another year in La Liga was all but confirmed, now we’ve suffered three defeats on the bounce after last Saturday’s 5-1 hammering away to Atlético Madrid. A draw would have probably been the most we could have asked for in the Vicente Calderon considering that Atlético have the best defence in Europe and Betis have a highly ineffective attack, but this was a battering with the team falling apart after going 1-0 down.

Rubén himself grabbed the consolation which won’t come as any surprise. This was his 16th goal of the season, contributing to 57% of the miserly 28 that Betis have scored this season; less than one per game in La Liga. Any guesses for the two second top goalscorers?

Two defenders embarrassingly. Pezzella and Vargas both with two goals each. I don’t want to be downcast but that is pathetic.

It’s just not worked for me this season. Everything started with optimism with a few exciting signings pre-season but no one has stepped up and delivered at all, aside from the two bookends of the team: Rubén and Adan. You could arguably fit in N’Diaye as well and possible Musonda who was brought in during the January transfer window. The team hasn’t felt right. I thought Ceballos would have played a big part despite being young but he’s not quite there yet. As for Portillo, Cejudo, Kadir and the like, they just don’t cut the mustard. Van der Vaart. Remember him? No, me neither.

Levante – must win

Levante are rock-bottom with 25 points. A loss to these really would set a bad atmosphere around the club and leave Betis, who are currently on 34 points, at the most six points above safety if Sporting and Getafe both lose as well. They’ve looked nailed on for relegation all season and this needs to continue on Saturday.

I don’t expect this to be an exciting match. It will be scrappy, hard fought and lacking quality with 1-0 written all over it…hopefully to the team in green or white.

If I’ve sold that to you enough then you can catch Betis vs Levante on Saturday night at 21:05 GMT.
